What happens at a show cause hearing for a probation violation?
In such a hearing, you are ordered to appear before a judge and “show cause” why your probation should not be revoked, or a sanction imposed. Typically the court will inform you as to exactly what the alleged violation is, and ask if you admit or deny the allegation. If you admit it, the judge would typically proceed to sentencing/disposition after hearing from the probation officer, prosecutor, and your attorney. If you deny the allegation, the judge would set a date for an evidentiary hearing. The prosecutor would be required to prove the allegation, and you would be allowed to present evidence that rebuts the allegation.
